Acid Neutralizer - Model #110 - Down Flow Type
Acid Neutralizer Schematic
    Your system consists of:
  • 1ea. 10" x 44" Polyethylene/Fiberglass tank
  • 1 ea. Distributor tube (pre-installed in tank)
  • 1 ea. XPI tank manifold with fill plug (pre-install in tank)
  • 2 ea. Manifold adapters 3/4" mipt x 1-1/4" CAF
  • 1 ea. CAF (Control-A-Flow) manual control valve with bypass
  • 1 ea. 3/4" 5-gpm "Dole" flow regulator
  • 13-15 lbs. sand/gravel
  • Approx. 100lbs Calcite (2 ea. 40-50lb bags, also known as food grade limestone)
  • Does not include valve connection to/from your respective water system
  • Does not include drain fitting connection from neutralizer to your drain system
  • The XPI Tank manifold is installed onto the tank. Looking down on the XPI you will see two female ports and directly to the side, one fill plug.

  • Step 1: Install the Sand/Gravel and Calcite (also known as Limestone - food grade). (If Sand/Gravel is already installed, then go to Step 2)
    • • Unscrew (counter clockwise) the fill plug on the XPI tank manifold. The fill plug is just to the side of the IN and OUT ports. Do not unscrew the entire tank manifold from off of the tank. Using a funnel (you can make a funnel or buy a $2 oil funnel locally)
      • Pour the approximately 15 pounds of Sand/Gravel into the 10" x 44" tank.
      • Next, pour the entire 90-100 lbs. of Calcite into the 10" x 44" tank. The Calcite and the Sand/Gravel together will only fill the tank 3/4 full. This is correct. During a backwash, there needs to be room for the Calcite to move inside the tank. Put the fill plug back, tightening clockwise until snug. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
  • Step 2: Install the two 3/4" mipt x 1 1/4" Manifold adapters
    • • Use PTFE thread sealing tape (3 or 4 wraps around) on the 3/4" male threads of the manifold adapters.
      • Use PTFE thread sealing tape only on the 3/4" side of the adapters.
      • Carefully screw one of the two manifold adapters (3/4" male) into the "IN" port and one into the "OUT" port on the XPI tank manifold. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
  • Step 3: Determining IN and OUT ports for Down flow setup.
    • • Looking down on the XPI Manifold with the fill plug on the XPI manifold towards you, in front of the two ports "IN" and "OUT". The "IN" port is on the LEFT and the "OUT" port is on the RIGHT.
  • Step 4: Install the CAF Manual control valve.
    • • The CAF Manual control valve has two female swivel nuts attached to the valve. The two swivel nuts will screw onto the two manifold adapters. DO NOT USE PTFE thread sealing tape on the male 1 1/4" manifold adapters.
      • The 1 1/4" male adapters have an "o ring" that seals them to the swivel nuts. Directly above each of the swivel nuts are arrows. The swivel nut with the DOWN arrow will screw onto the IN port. The swivel nut with the UP arrow will screw onto the OUT port.
      • Tighten the swivel nuts clockwise. Make sure to tighten evenly by screwing one side a couple of turns, and then the other side a couple of turns until snug. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
  • Step 5: Connect piping to the House.
    • • On top of the CAF control valve are two 1" Male NPT pipe threads. There are arrows below the male threads. The DOWN arrow is the INLET and the UP arrow is the OUTLET. Connect your piping accordingly. The 5-gpm Dole valve (3/4") needs to be installed on the INLET side of the Acid Neutralizer. Fittings (not provided) will be needed to adapt the Dole valve to and from your piping and to the CAF control valve.
  • Step 6: Install the Drain
    • • The CAF control valve has a 1/2" female drain port on the opposite side of the control valve handle. The unit will discharge water out of the drain during a backwash. The discharging water will have the same pressure as your normal household water pressure, so the drain line will need to be secured. You will need to connect piping and run this to an acceptable drain using appropriate back flow prevention.
  • Step 7: To put the neutralizer into service
    • • Put the CAF control valve in the backwash position. Turn on the water supply to the neutralizer very slowly and keep it at a slow flow. The tank should take at least 10 minutes to fill completely up. As it is in the backwash position, the water will fill the tank from the bottom up. As the tank fills, water and air will exit out of the drain. The water will be cloudy at first. When the water running from the drain is clear and running freely, (not spitting)
      • Slowly turn the CAF control valve to the service position. Turn on a faucet in the house and run water until it is running free and clear (expect it to take quite a few minutes).

Note: Make sure the 5-gpm regulator is installed BEFORE the neutralizer. This will ensure the Backwash does not flow faster than 5gpm. Water enters through the top of the unit, flows through the media, then through the gravel, and then travels up the distributor tube. Customer should backwash when pressure gets low, only for approximately 5 minutes. Backwashing instructions are on the knob handle of the Controls-a-flo valve. An Acid Neutralizer creates hardness, so you might consider installing a Water Softener directly after it.

"I just installed the distribution tube that attaches to the manifold and it is not glued into the tank. Is this correct?"
The distribution tube is pushed into the manifold. The manifold has an o-ring that seals and secures it and nothing else needs to be done.

? "A friend of mine told me that an up-flow acid neutralizer is better. Is there any truth to that?"
Everyone has an opinion. The negative to a down-flow system is that the neutralizing media can "cake" easier than an up-flow system. That is the only positive that we can see with an up-flow system. Our down-flow system will have less loss (waste) of media, and you will get less uncontrolled media into your home with our down-flow system. Generally, our system will have better "contact" time (your water flowing through the media). We could easily sell an up-flow system instead, or offer both. We believe that our system works better for neutralizing water, but please understand that there is no "perfect" system.

"Does the manifold require PTFE thread sealing tape on the threads where it connects to the tank?"
Do NOT use PTFE thread sealing tape there. PTFE thread sealing tape will prevent the manifold from securing all the way down and thereby using it would not to allow the o-ring to seal completely. Silicone lubricant can be used on the o-ring and it will make it easier to unscrew later.
